Bill and Jean Nicol celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Saturday. Mrs Nicol, 88, met her husband at a dance in England.
Mr Nicol, 93, was a bomber pilot with the Royal Australian Air Force. They married in England after a whirlwind courtship of about eight weeks.
When Mr Nicol was sent home, his wife followed six months later on the bride (war brides) ship SS Wairangi.
They settled in Spotswood in 1957.
Asked about the secret to a long marriage, Mrs Nicol said they “just got along”.
They have three children, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
