When they’re not busy fighting crime, Wyndham police officers have been hard at work raising money – and their heart rates – to help out people living in poverty.
Thirty-two police officers from the Werribee, Wyndham North and Laverton stations will be working in teams of four to conquer the Oxfam trailwalker event at Melbourne, during which they’ll have to walk 100 kilometres in less than 40 hours.
The annual event is held in 11 countries around the world, with money raised going towards Oxfam’s efforts to fight poverty and injustice.
First Constable Amanda Bennett said police had been taking part in weekly treks around the You Yangs and Werribee Open Range Zoo, as well as gym sessions, to get ready for the walk.
Members will also take part in the Wyndham Relay for Life the week before the Oxfam trailwalker event to get in some last-minute training.
First Constable Bennett said the trek challenge was a great way for police to hang out with fellow officers of different ranks and departments with whom they might otherwise not see much.
“It creates a good team environment, some positive reasons to catch up outside of work, and makes for a happy team environment,” she said.
Police have been out in force pursuing their fundraising efforts, manning many Bunnings sausage sizzles and planning a trivia night in a bid to reach their $15,000 fundraising goal.
