Maribyrnong has a new mayor following the uncontested election of councillor Cuc Lam to the role.
Cr Lam was nominated by outgoing councillor Catherine Cumming at a special council meeting on Wednesday night.
“It is a great honour and privilege to be elected mayor of Maribyrnong City Council,” she told the meeting.
“Thank you to outgoing mayor Catherine Cumming, I just look forward to working with my fellow councillors and making Maribyrnong City Council one of the best councils in Victoria.”
Cr Lam came to Australia in 1978 as a refugee from Vietnam, fleeing by boat.
She has described this experience as the inspiration for helping people and supporting people who are in need.
Cr Lam was elected to council last year, returning to the role after serving a stint in the early 2000s.
Her election to mayor comes 20 years after Mai Ho took the Maribyrnong robes to become the first female Vietnamese mayor in Australia.
Her elevation marks the first time in five years that Labor has held the mayoralty.
The last Labor mayor was John Cumming, who was tipped out of council as the mayoralty passed to his sister Catherine, the first of four independents to hold the position during the last council term.
Labor’s Sarah Carter retained her role as deputy mayor without contest.
