CWA Footscray branch is no half-baked idea

It’s not just about the scones …

Louise Taylor has been cooking up plans for a new Footscray branch of the Country Women’s Association, and says baking prowess is just the tip of the CWA iceberg.

The West Footscray resident notes the CWA has been involved in vital community work since 1928, in areas ranging from child and maternal health to tackling drug problems.

“It’s actually the largest women’s advocacy group in Australia,” she said. “It’s a powerful organisation. We work as advocates, covering social issues like ice addiction, suicide prevention and family violence.”

Although facing decline in some areas, the CWA is growing in others, and still has about 6000 members in 330 branches across Victoria.

Ms Taylor said a recent resurgence had led to branches opening in Altona, Essendon and Point Cook.

“It’s really about friendship. I think there’s a lot of urban isolation – it’s not just in the country. It’s somewhere women can have a friendship group, be part of a community.”

Ms Taylor’s own involvement began three years ago as a member of the Point Cook branch. She said there was now strong interest in a new branch in the Yarraville, Seddon and Footscray area.

An information meeting, with supper, will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 6-8pm, at Footscray library. Contact: cwaofvicfootscray@gmail.com
