Cyber safety internships open

The state government is calling all cyber security graduates looking to kick-start their careers and learn how to help protect Victorians from cyber threats.

Expressions of interest have opened for acceptance into the third round of the Cyber Internship Program, which will run from February to August 2026.

Building on the success of the 2024 and 2025 intakes, the six-month paid internship offers an opportunity for participants to work alongside cyber security experts mitigating threats to government departments and the broader community, to develop their cyber security skills and experience.

As part of the program, interns will have the opportunity to build skills in cyber incident response, threat intelligence, and security operations, among other areas of expertise.

Participants will be selected from graduates of Certificate IV in Cyber Security.

In its first two years, the internship led to nine of the 12 interns who completed the program going on to related roles within the Victorian Government.

According to the Commonwealth Government’s annual cyber threat report, there were more than 84,000 reports of cybercrime in the 2024–25 financial year, an average of one every six minutes.

The Cyber Internship Program aims to grow Victoria’s cyber workforce and help reduce the cyber skills shortage. Applications for the program open today and close 2 November 2025.

Government services minister Natalie Hutchins said the internship is a crucial way to source the best talent to protect the country from cyber attacks.

“There are hundreds of cyber-attacks every day in Australia, so investing in the future of Victoria’s cyber security industry is important as more of our everyday services move online,” she said.

“The Cyber Internship Program will provide Victoria’s newest cyber professionals with hands-on experience safeguarding our state against cyber threats.”
