Deer’s West Footscray frolic

A stray baby deer has been taken to a wildlife sanctuary after being safely captured following a chase through the streets of Tottenham and West Footscray.

Maribyrnong council officers, local police and vets were part of efforts to recapture the deer after it was spotted running down Rupert Street shortly after 3pm last Thursday.

Council acting infrastructure director Patrick Jess said the council’s animal management staff and Victoria Police were called to Barkly Street after reports of a deer wandering around the business district.

“After several attempts at capture, the deer was ultimately able to be contained in a front yard in Elphinstone Street, with help from members of the public,” he said.

“Vets for Compassion transported the young deer to a wildlife sanctuary outside Melbourne, where it is reported to be safe and happy.”
