Developers eye off West Footscray Station land

Developers are being courted to renew a prime slice of inner-west land at West Footscray station.

The 5000-square-metre site between Cross Street and the railway line, opposite Whitten Oval, was earmarked for redevelopment by the former state government in 2014.

The land’s owner, VicTrack, is now seeking expressions of interest and inviting community input on potential future uses for the site, which is likely to house multi-storey apartments above small retail spaces.

The site was one of 10 Melbourne railway station sites identified for sale in 2014.

It is currently occupied by the Western Emergency Relief Network, a Rotary-backed charity that helps trauma victims recovering from events such as fires and floods.

The redevelopment will not be affected by the construction of a third platform at the station for terminating peak-hour trains as part of the Melbourne Metro project.

Footscray MP Marsha Thomson said redeveloping the site could breathe new life into the precinct and attract more people to the area.

“West Footscray station was completely rebuilt as part of Labor’s Regional Rail Link Project, and now we’re looking to make the most of the land around it,” she said.

VicTrack has flagged the possibility of some of the development proceeds being used to make improvements at Tottenham station.

Expressions of interest to tender for the project close on December 15.

A community information session will be held from 4-7pm on Monday, December 12, at the VFL Meeting Room, Whitten Oval.
