Hobsons Bay’s annual dogs breakfast and microchipping day will be held at Altona’s Apex Park on Saturday.

The council is offering $25 microchipping and free first-time dog registrations with proof that animals are microchipped and desexed.

Victorian law requires cats and dogs to be microchipped as a condition of registration.

Lost dogs that are registered and microchipped can be reunited directly with their owners from Hobsons Bay instead of being impounded at the Lost Dogs Home.

Hobsons Bay’s corporate services director, Tammi Rose, said that between December 27 and January 4, 25 dogs were picked up.

“Of these, 11 dogs were microchipped and were able to be returned directly to their owners whilst 14 dogs were impounded,” she said. “Eight of the 14 impounded dogs have since been collected … the remaining six have yet to be claimed.”

All dogs more than three months old must be registered, with registrations due each April. The fine for keeping an unregistered dog is $311.

The breakfast is also a chance for dog owners to learn to be mindful of wildlife. Pet owners can enjoy a dog-friendly bird walk, flyball demonstration and entertainment.

It’s from 8.30-11.30am at Apex Park, opposite Kooringal Golf Course. Bookings and pre-payment are essential for microchipping – petregister.com.au/events
