VicHealth chief executive, Dr Sandro Demaio, has announced he is stepping down from the role to take up a position with the United Nations.

After five years leading the state’s health promotion foundation, Dr Demaio will depart early next year and move to Seoul, South Korea where he’ll lead the World Health Organisation’s regional work on climate, environment, and health.

VicHealth board chair Nicola Roxon said Dr. Demaio’s tenure at the orgnaisation had been transformative.

“His commitment to systems change has empowered VicHealth to address the root causes of health inequities, creating pathways to improved health outcomes for all Victorians and sustainable progress in public health policy across our state and beyond,” Ms Roxon said.

“While we are sorry to see Sandro leave, it’s a testament to his exceptional leadership and skills that he is called to this critical global role.”

In preparation for Dr Demaio’s departure, VicHealth will shortly begin a recruitment process to find his replacement.
