Greek comedy superstar Effie Stephanidis is coming to the Yarraville Club for two special Christmas performances of her show ‘Better Out Than In’.
Actress and comedian Mary Coustas said the show will be a look back at how Effie coped during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
“Prior to COVID, whe’d been living in a false economy of illusions,” she said.
“She had to take a long hard look at herself.
“She had to try and stay positive.”
Coustas said the show is a celebration of connection following COVID.
“It’s the one issue we all have in common,” she said.
“We all reverted to very animal instincts.”
Coustas said the main highlight of the show was Effie’s interactions with the audience.
“Effie sees herself as the people’s boofhead,” she said.
“Half the show is improvised.
“That’s when it becomes a high-wire act.”
Coustas said people of all ages come to the shows, even children as young as 14.
“People have bought the box set and shown it to their kids,” she said.
Coustas said the show also attracted LGBTQIA+ viewers and viewers across a “really diverse” range of racial and cultural backgrounds.
“It’s a character that represents a lot of the minorities,” she said.
Coustas said the character is a representation of the racism she experienced living in Doncaster in the 1970s, which is mirrored in the racism which Effie experienced while growing up in Broadmeadows.
Effie said she is looking forward to getting up close and personal with Yarraville audiences.
“Help me lift the weight of ugliness and isolation off my very attractive chest in this up close and personal end of year laugh fest,” she said.
“Don’t miss it – it’s a classic.”
‘Better Out Than In’ will be showing on Friday, December 9 and Saturday, December 10, with dinner and show tickets available.
