Hobsons Bay councillors voted unanimously to respond to a petition asking council to fix Fabric Drive and its intersection with Blackshaws Road in Altona North.
In its meeting on June 20, councillors noted the approved intersection of Fabric Drive and Blackshaws Road in the Mirvac development.
Council recommended that the approved intersection does not preclude future opportunities for a pedestrian crossing over Blackshaws Road on the western side of the intersection and for the delivery of separate footpath and bike path on the western side of the southern end of Fabric Drive.
Council received the petition from Better West Inc, including 154 signatories from Hobsons Bay residents, which was tabled at the council meeting held on March 14.
In summary, the petitioners request that council redesign a proposed intersection of Blackshaws Road and a new north-south road (Fabric Drive) in the Mirvac development.
The proposed redesign includes a pedestrian crossing on Blackshaws Road on the western side of the intersection, and a separate off-road bike path and pedestrian footpath on the western side of Fabric Drive.
Cr Jonathon Marsden asked if council considered all options for the design of the intersection.
Sustainable communities director Penelope Winslade said all options were considered.
“The eastern side is not possible for a couple of reasons , the first is that the comprehensive development plan states the dedicated bike line must be on the western side,” she said.
“The second reason is that along the eastern side in the future there will be driveways and line ways coming onto Fabric drive so there is not a conducive location to have a bike path interacting with traffic in that way.”
