Fake cash, tomahawk seized from sleeping driver

A man asleep in a car in Williamstown North has been allegedly caught with counterfeit money, a tomahawk, flick knife and potentially dangerous tools.

Police came across the sleeping driver in stolen car in Macaulay Street about 11.50pm on Wednesday.

A search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered fake cash and weapons.

The driver, a 23-year-old Burwood man, has been charged with 19 offences including car theft, weapons offences and handling stolen goods.

Hobsons Bay acting Inspector Jason Templar said extra officers had been deployed across the west overnight to detect and prevent crime.

“Our proactive, intelligence-led patrols are deployed to deter and detect any antisocial or criminal behaviour,” he said.

Extra bike and foot patrols have also been deployed across Hobsons Bay, including around Altona and Williamstown beaches.

Sergeant Anthony Quirke said the patrols were part of Operation Tao, aimed at driving down crime in the area.

“You’ll notice us around popular destinations in Hobsons Bay – at transport hubs, shopping centres, public parks and walking trails,” he said.

“These patrols are in addition to the wider 24/7 police response in Hobsons Bay and all of Melbourne’s west.”
