A Seddon family has recovered their beloved hand-built caravan after it was stolen on Boxing Day.
As reported by Star Weekly earlier this month, it was towed from outside their Bilston Street home on the day they were set to go on a family holiday.
Father Andrew Steward said it had taken about 200 hours to build the distinctive “teardrop” caravan, which is modelled on a 1940s design.
He said someone had anonymously put a clipping of the Star Weekly article in his letterbox, with a note written on it saying they had seen the caravan outside an Altona North address.
Mr Steward said he also received a message on his phone informing him of the tip-off in the letter box.
“As far as I know, he saw it in the paper, recognised it and then he pretty much got in contact with me straight away,” Mr Steward said. “Then I contacted the police … they picked it up a few days later.”
Mr Steward retrieved the caravan from police on Monday.
“I thought it was gone, so I’m just obviously happy,” he said.
“It’s good that it’s finally made its way back home, and it seems it’s undamaged.
“It’s unusual that it was just left in somebody’s front yard adjacent to the road in clear view of everybody. It wasn’t hidden at all.
“It’s a bit of a strange one.”
