Fast teen takes on the world

Chandler Cooper is back from the US as he prepares to become Australia's next champion - Steven Tucker

Williamstown North teenager Chandler Cooper is living the dream after being contracted for the 2017 Moto3 Junior World Championship in Europe.

The 16-year-old, who started riding dirt bikes at age 10, aims to be Australia’s next champion by the time he’s an adult.

He spends most of his time away from Australia but was back home this month.

“I’ve only just come back for two weeks and then I’m back in Spain to do my first race and then I race at Le Mans [France],” Cooper said. “This year, I’m still learning and trying to make my way up to the top. More than likely, next year I might hop onto a bigger bike, we’re not sure yet.”

Cooper, who attended Williamstown High School, has since raced on well-known circuits including Jerez, Catalunya and Valencia and Albacete in Spain.

He’s come a long way from being turned away from the track at Winton in country Victoria two years ago.

Cooper said he hoped to win a championship next year.

“For me, it’s always been a dream,” he said.

Cooper has started a gofundme page to help raise money for his education and travel expenses for 2017.
