In the early hours of Friday October 14, 2022, the Maribyrnong River burst its banks and caused widespread devastation.
More than 500 homes and businesses in Maribyrnong, in the federal electorate of Fraser, were flooded.
Nearly 12 months on, the trauma for many people remains.
Fraser MP Dr Daniel Mulino said the aftermath of the Maribyrnong River flood have continued to have a huge impact on the lives of many thousands of Australians.
“My staff are still advocating for residents who have outstanding claims with their insurance companies,“ he said.
“Meanwhile, they are also trying to rebuild their lives, which is difficult when claims haven’t been settled.”
Dr Mulino said that this was one reason the inquiry recently announced by the federal the government was so important.
The House Standing Committee on Economics, which Dr Mulino chairs, will investigate insurers’ responses to the major flood events in 2022.
To kick off the inquiry, an online survey has been launched to hear from people who were affected by the floods.
“It is really important that people participate in the survey.
“I urge people to complete the survey because it is important that committee members have a really good understanding of people’s experiences with their insurance companies.
“Their evidence will inform our discussions and questions throughout the inquiry and help guide our recommendations.”
