Returning for the first time since COVID, Melbourne Filmoteca will be screening ’Nuestras Voces’, at The Sun Theatre in Yarraville.

Filmoteca has been bringing Spanish and Latin American stories to Melbourne via film for over 20 years, now the Melbourne made documentary by Diana Paez is said to tell an inspiring story.

“It’s a beautiful way of exploring Melbourne’s and Australia’s history through the eyes of Spanish speaking migrants,” said Diana.

Nuestras Voces (Our Voices) tells stories of diaspora from Latin America, it tells the compelling stories of Spanish-speaking migrants who arrived in Victoria between the 1960’s and 1980’s and their profound impact on the social and cultural tapestry of Australia.

The event will also include a Q&A session with the film director and people featured in the film as well as a dance performance by official sponsor Son de Mexico Ballet Folklorico.

Diana said having a live element to the event is what makes Filmoteca special.

“We don’t not only bring films, because there’s festivals that do that already.

“We always bring a cultural link to the event, sometimes we have music, dance, food, this time the ticket includes a drink on arrival and seeing the dance show.”

The event is not only for those who speak Spanish but for everyone, as Diana said most people can relate to migration.

“Melbourne is a city made from migrants, and many people, even if they’re second, third or fourth generation, have these stories in their family histories.

“There are similarities with Greeks, Italians, and Turkish communities, which are really, really big in Melbourne.

“The beautiful thing is that people can see themselves in the feelings of the stories.“

The event will be held on Saturday, October 28 from 4:30pm.
