Iconic jam doughnuts, playground marble battles, asylum seeker policy and a missing child will light up the screen when the west’s biggest short film festival returns this month.
The fourth annual Setting Sun Short Film Festival will be held at Yarraville’s Sun Theatre from April 27 to 30.
Judges have been kept busy sifting through a record 84 entries from destinations local and as far-flung as South America and London.
This year’s festival will open with award-winning documentary Olympic Nick, starring now-retired Footscray doughnut maker Nick Tsiligiris.
Festival founder and director Anna Bourozikas said entries included quirky comedy, film noir-style fantasy, claymation and documentaries.
“The judges have called it the strongest year ever – entries have been of an amazing standard,” she said.
It’s gone from being a small local event into something larger, attracting filmmakers from around Victoria, interstate and overseas.”
Finalists this year include well-known artists and award-winning films from the western suburbs and beyond, as well as familiar faces such as comedians Greg Fleet and Dave O’Neil.
The Rouge Program will showcase the work of female filmmakers and the Rising Sun program will feature works produced by secondary school students.
