A crime scene has been established after a Footscray apartment was severely damaged by fire this morning.

Fire Rescue Victoria was called to a three-storey apartment complex in Hyde Street at about 10.30am on Thursday, October 3, after reports of a fire on the top floor.

Fire crews arrived to find the apartment fully engulfed in flames and the sole occupant unaccounted for.

Firefighters entered the apartment to attack the fire and search for the occupant.

The fire was contained to the single apartment and brought under control shortly before 11am.

Police and specialist fire investigators are currently attempting to determine the cause of the blaze, while fire crews are expected to remain at the scene for the next few hours to complete operations.

Neither Victoria police or FRV would confirm to Star Weekly if the occupant of the apartment had been accounted for.
