Fire forces Footscray tower evacuation

An estimated 100 residents were evacuated from a Footscray apartment tower last night after a fire broke out on the 14th floor.

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) firefighters arrived at the Victoria Square apartment complex in the Joseph Road precinct at about 9.15pm on Thursday, January 23 to find smoke coming from a 28-storey building on Hallenstein Street.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus went up to the level 14 apartment to battle the fire, which was confined to a space of roughly five square metres.

Other firefighters were assisted by Victoria Police in evacuating about 100 people from the premises.

The fire was brought under control by about 9.34pm, but FRV crews remained on scene for some time afterwards to monitor for hotspots and check if the fire had spread to neighbouring properties.

An electrical company was on scene to assess the premises, while emergency services liaised with the concierge and building company to organise cleaning services and rehousing for residents whose apartments were affected by fire or water.

The apartment tower was handed back to the concierge about 11.45pm.
