Fishy behaviour nets $3k in fines

Three men have been caught at Newport boat ramp with 36 undersize snapper.

The three Hoppers Crossing men, aged 19, 30 and 46, were stopped by Victorian Fisheries Authority officers after they retrieved their boat on Tuesday night.

Officers searched their vehicle and found a bucket containing 36 snapper, 27 of which were well undersize.

The smallest measured only 19.9 centimetres with the legal minimum being 28 centimetres.

The bag limit is 10, of which no more than three fish may be 40 centimetres or more in length.

Another snapper was found behind their boat’s fuel tank.

Each of the men will receive fines of nearly $1000.

If you see or suspect illegal fishing, call 13FISH (13 34 74) 24 hours.
