Floyd’s Patch gardeners welcome visitors

Floyd Lodge community garden at Williamstown will be open to the public for one day in November to show people how things have grown this year.

Dubbed Floyd’s Patch, the garden at the base of the Hanmer Street public housing tower for older residents, sprouted as part of the state government’s Well for Life program to promote healthy eating and exercise for people over 55.

Resident gardener Denis Kerr says the garden has brought together people of many different backgrounds.

“There’s quite a lot of different nationalities – there’s people from Asia, Europe; there’s also a few Australians there as well,” he said.

“They all grow their different herbs and their different plants that they’re used to and they use them in their cooking.

“The beauty of it is, the gardens are raised boxes because of the older people who can’t bend over all the time.”

Friends of Floyd Garden last week received a $2500 grant from the Hobsons Bay Community Fund to upgrade its planting boxes.

Floyd’s Patch at 63 Hanmer Street, Williamstown, will be open from noon-2pm on Saturday, November 12.

There will be a barbecue lunch, cheap home- grown plants for sale and a performance by the Willin Wimmin choir.
