The city of Maribyrnong’s reputation as a foodies’ multicultural haven will be strengthened with a new web series that will later be screened by SBS On Demand.

Chef out West, featuring seven restaurants, was produced by Maribyrnong council and will be launched on Friday, July 16.

Chefs featured are from Blue Bamboo (Vietnamese restaurant) in Braybrook, Chi Bao (Chinese restaurant) in Yarraville, Chibog (Filipino restaurant) in West Footscray, Cafe Terroni (Southern Italian restaurant) in Yarraville, and Konjo (Ethiopian restaurant), Charlie’s Pizza Restaurant and Small French Bar in Footscray.

Blue Bamboo is a family business that started six years ago.

Chef Toan Nguyen said his restaurant brought a taste of Vietnam to Braybrook.

“Usually, in my kitchen, I cook with my mum,“ he said.

“She is my teacher as well.

“If I make a mistake, she will help me to fix the mistake.

“She learned from my grandmother … she passed on her recipes to me.

“My neighbours, people around here, they love the food here.

“When I came here, I don’t think I will be a chef because I don’t have no idea how to set up the restaurant.

“I am nervous. I just think, oh, I have to bring Vietnamese culture to Braybrook.“
