Footscray flood as water mains erupt

Water flooding down Parker Street in Footscray.

Water has erupted from burst mains beneath the street in Footscray, flooding its way down Parker Street in a murky torrent.

A resident who witnessed the flooding, which began around noon, said she had initially called Maribyrnong Council which said it was not its problem, directing her to City West Water.

City West Water said that all their crews were busy in the CBD, but would attend within an hour.

The resident said the water pressure was so high she could feel a rumbling from beneath the  bitumen as the water forced its way up through the concrete.

“There is a river down the street and down the alleyway,” she said.

A spokeswoman said City West Water shares the community’s concern for the loss of water when leaks and bursts occur and moves to repair them as soon as possible.”

“When leaks and bursts are reported, we prioritise them according to the severity of the

“Our Field Supervisor was onsite to assess the burst on Parker Street, Footscray within 30

The Supervisor took action to reduce the water pressure by closing nearby valves and contacted further crews to provide the necessary equipment to undertake repairs.”

She said the repairs are currently being undertaken and will be completed later Wednesday night.
