A local Footscray artist has unveiled his new artwork on a public toilet, celebrating some of the key landmarks of Footscray.

Commission by Maribyrnong council, ‘Footscray Flow’ has recently been installed on the public toilet facility on the corner of Paisley and French Streets, Footscray. Created by local artist Andy Robertson, the artwork is titled ‘Footscray Flow’ and celebrates the freedom to move through urban space with a feeling of safety and security that our humble public toilets provide.

Mr Robertson said the artwork includes a number of iconic Footscray landmarks, including Franco Cozzo, the Royal Hotel building, the State Trustees building and the Maribyrnong River.

“The colourful drawings show views of Footscray and the western suburbs, from both bird’s-eye and street-level perspectives,” he said.

“The door panels feature images of flowing water which humorously call to mind both the irrepressible sense of urgency that the search for a public toilet can take on, and the mellow feeling of tranquility, confidence and safety that success in that search brings.”

Andy Robertson is also responsible for the murals ‘Right Now, In Footscray’ in the alleyway between Footscray Library and Footscray Baptist Church, and ‘Four Views of Footscray’ on the traffic signal box on the corner of Droop and Donald Streets, Footscray.
