Footscray Pop Up School celebrates all things cool

A one-day school of all things cool will pop up in the heart of Footscray this Saturday.

Presented by the Public Pedagogies Institute, the inaugural Footscray Pop Up School is a free community event celebrating the diverse ways people teach and learn.

Maddern Square will be host to performances, workshops and exhibitions by Footscray Trugo Club, Footscray Historic Society, L2R Next Gen, 100 Story Building and the Weekly Ticket artist David Wells.

The event is a chance to learn a skill, take home a piece of knowledge and contribute to the future of education in Footscray.

Public Pedagogies Institute researcher and president Karen Charman said the event will form part of research on how knowledge is perceived and valued in Footscray.

“We consider the stories and memories from the Footscray community members to be very valuable, in recognising the knowledge the community holds and how that knowledge can be shared with others,” she said.

Try your hand at the west’s very own sport of Trugo, learn how ‘the Weekly Ticket Guy’ turns dialogue into songs, or get your groove on with a dance workshop hosted by L2R Next Gen.

Bring your school photographs along to Footscray Historic Society to see how times have changed, or partner your creative writing genius with 100 Story Building’s animated facilitators.

Program director Lachlann Carter said 100 Story Building’s programs open up and demystify the creative process.

“In our workshops, mistakes become opportunities for stories to take new directions. We engage our participants in their learning by handing over creative control, and providing a platform for them to share their ideas.”

The Footscray Pop Up School will be held at Maddern Square from noon until 4pm, on Saturday, November 19.
