Maribyrnong council will be holding free family movie nights thanks to the installation of new LED scoreboards at a number of reserves and ovals across the municipality.

The announcement was made at the most recent council meeting on April 12, after a notice of motion was presented by councillor Cuc Lam.

Over the past few years council has invested funding towards the installation of LED scoreboards to support the many local sports clubs across Maribyrnong, with Henry Turner North Reserve, Shorten Reserve, Hansen Reserve and Yarraville Oval being some of the included sites.

With these sites being spread across the municipality, council has proposed free summer movie nights starting in the 2022/23 financial year, which would occur simultaneously across all sites with the new LED screens.

“I have come across some councils in rural areas that have been very successful having that sort of activity to bring families and all the neighbours together,” Cr Lam said.

“Through the lockdowns we saw our parks loved by our community more than ever….. and now we have the opportunity to maximise council investment by working with our sports club to provide free movie nights to our community across the city.”

Cr Michael Clarke said Cr Lam’s proposition facilitated the idea of families coming together and “participating as one.”

“I think it’s a brilliant idea and again it’s a reflection of [Cr Cuc Lam’s] great work,” he said.

Council will provide updates on the family movie night program on their website and through social media.
