All outbound lanes of the West Gate Freeway are closed at Altona North after a crash involving a truck and several cars.
The crash happened just after the Millers Road exit shortly before 2pm today (Tuesday).
Four lanes of the freeway have been closed to allow clean up of diesel spilled from the truck.
VicRoads spokesman Andrew Crooke urged motorists to find another route home to avoid massive peak hour delays.
“All outbound lanes are closed off at the moment,” he said.
“There was a truck that lost a lot of diesel, a few cars involved.
“CityLink are doing a clean-up at the moment … but there’s some huge delays pushed back to Domain Tunnel.”
Mr Crooke said motorists could use Footscray and Dynon roads to get into Footscray and then Geelong Road back to the freeway.
“Traffic that’s on the freeway is actually able to slip off at Millers Road and then back on again at Millers Road to get around the collision, but of course that’s moving very slowly in single file. We’ve got VicRoads engineers adjusting traffic lights on surrounding roads to keep that traffic moving.
“We’re just trying to get the word out there to everyone to find another way home, get public transport if you can.”
