Two P-plate drivers racing each other on the Princes Freeway at Laverton have been caught by police on Wednesday night.

Westgate Highway Patrol officers first spotted a black Range Rover speeding in the outbound lanes of the Princes Freeway about 11.30pm.

The vehicle then returned in the opposite direction.

Police say a BMW coupe overtook the Range Rover before the two vehicles began driving side-by-side, allegedly reaching speeds of 134km/h in a 100km/h zone.

Police intercepted the Range Rover on the freeway and caught up with the BMW when the driver stopped for fuel a short distance up the road.

A Tarneit man, 21, and Altona North man, 20, were each fined $524 for speeding and received four demerit points.
