West Gate Freeway users are being warned to prepare for changes to lanes in both directions until early next as part of work for the West Gate Tunnel Project.
Inbound and outbound drivers will be shifted to different sections of the freeway throughout the works, allowing construction sites to be set up on the freeway’s existing lanes, which will be rebuilt from the ground up.
Starting from Wednesday, October 27, the lanes on the inbound freeway will be split between the Williamstown Road exit and entry ramps.
Two lanes will shift right onto a parallel bridge and two lanes will stay on the West Gate Freeway.
As the lanes will join up again past Williamstown Road, drivers can remain in their existing lane.
From Thursday, October 28, the outbound freeway will be split between Willamstown and Millers roads.
Two lanes will shift left onto the newly built bridge at Williamstown Road and two lanes will remain on the West Gate Freeway.
The lanes will reconnect about 450m before the Millers Road outbound exit ramp, giving drivers time to change lanes if exiting at Millers Road.
Construction works on the M80 interchange and West Gate Freeway ramps are also continuing until November 8.
The Princes Freeway to Geelong Road ramp and the Grieve Parade city-bound entry ramp to the West Gate Freeway are both closed.
Motorists should plan ahead and allow extra travel time with delays of up to 15 minutes expected.
The West Gate Tunnel Project is widening the freeway from 8 to 12 through lanes, with the aim of delivering more reliable journeys and slashing travel times by up to 20 minutes between the city and Melbourne’s west.
