More funding will be available for not-for-profit organisations and local councils, like Melton and Moorabool, to desex thousands of dogs and cats in order to improve animal welfare and prevent unwanted pets.
The Victorian Government announced a new round of grants last week with a total of half a million dollars on offer.
The funding is aimed to improve the quality of domestic pet welfare across the state through the purchasing of equipment and expanding on pet desexing services.
The announcement comes after a significant increase in demand for new pets and adoptions Victoria wide, with the proportion of pet-owning households increasing from 61 per cent to 69 per cent in the past two years.
Minister for Agriculture Mary-Anne Thomas said the initiative was important as pets are a vital part of life for many Victorians.
“This funding will support councils and not-for-profit organisations to provide crucial desexing services and improve animal welfare outcomes for all,” Ms Thomas said.
