Gateway Community Services is seeking volunteers to go on adventures with people who have a mild disability.
The not-for-profit organisation, based in South Kingsville, supports people with disability and their carers and runs social and lifestyle groups.
One of those groups is the Adventurers, which organises social outings for people with low support needs who live in Hobsons Bay and Wyndham.
Disability respite team leader Carol Tymoszek says the Adventurers meet from 9am-3pm on Tuesdays, enjoying outings to, for example, football, fishing, barbecues, river cruises, live music and movies.
Ms Tymoszek drives the group’s bus, with about 20 people attending each outing.
“We’re looking for somebody who can support our participants.
“We’re community-based so we get out and about,” she said. “It’s really just assisting or supporting our participants to access the community and socialise with them, because they have very low-level support needs and they’re very independent.
“I need a volunteer to assist: to go knock on the door so they know we’re there, help them on the bus, collect money … it’s really minor duties. It’s all about them getting out and about, making friends and having fun.”
Participants are also welcome to join the group.
