Alexander Wojno possibly understands maths better than women.

The Maribyrnong man hopes that becoming a contestant on Nine’s Beauty and the Geek may change that.

A maths tutor, Alexander has a bachelor of science majoring in neuroscience, a diploma of mathematics and statistics, and is now completing his master of teaching.

“I’m a South African-born Polish chap, with a huge passion for maths, gaming and food,” the 26-year-old said.

“I grew up obsessed with all things medical, dreaming of becoming a doctor like the rest of my family members.

“But then I actually started studying it and realised it’s not fun at all for me and way too depressing.

“So, I switched to the one thing I can see myself doing in life and having fun – maths.”

Alexander is one of 10 ‘geeks’ matched with 10 ‘beauties’ who work together on a series of real-life challenges.

Winning couples from each night’s challenge score one-on-one date time and at the end of the series, one couple will be declared the winner and take home $100,000.

So, does Alexander think opposites can attract?

“I think there are too many variables to give a definite answer to that question,” he said.

“It is literally down to a case-by-case basis, can’t generalise it.

“There are many cases where opposites attract and many where they don’t.”

Alexander said he hoped to form deep friendships with people by going on the show.

“I’ve experienced a lot of loneliness and solitude in my life and one of the things which brings me meaning and happiness is having strong relationships with people, family and friends,” he said.

“And of course, I’m definitely keen on possibly exploring the world of romance and understanding women.”

Beauty and the Geek airs Sunday at 7pm and Monday and Tuesday at 7.30pm on Channel 9.
