Renowned Brooklyn artist Geoffrey Ricardo has been awarded a $330,000 commission for public art works along the Kororoit Creek shared trail at Altona North.

His work titled, A strange trail of beasts, spirits and guardians will feature eight figures, each about three metres tall, spaced along 7.5 kilometres of the trail, which will eventually connect Geelong Road to Cherry Lake and Millers Road.

The artwork was commissioned by Hobsons Bay council and will be funded by Toyota Australia as part of the latter’s $1.8million contribution towards the trail’s construction.

The council’s art project advisory group unanimously selected Ricardo’s work from 44 submissions. Ricardo said he looked for things that would resonate with people.

“People have been prominent around that area for  a very long time … Indigenous and then waves of immigrants – they’re guardians reflecting different aspects of the area.”

The artwork will be revealed to the public next July.
