Hobsons Bay’s annual dogs’ breakfast and microchipping day will be held at Altona’s Apex Park on January 16.

The council is offering discounted microchipping through the Lost Dogs Home and free first-time dog registration with proof that the animal is microchipped and desexed.

Registration is normally $46 for a dog that is microchipped and desexed, but will be $25 at the breakfast. All dogs over three months old must be registered in Hobsons Bay, with registrations due each April. The fine for keeping an unregistered dog is $295.

Dog owners at the breakfast can also find out how to protect native birds and other animals from their best friend, and what to do about snakes.

Mayor Peter Hemphill urged people to come along and introduce their dogs to some new friends. “Giveaways and a free breakfast for both dogs and owners will mean no one goes home with an empty belly,” he said.

The event is from 8.30am-11.30am at Apex Park, opposite Kooringal Golf Course, in Queen Street.
