Yarraville residents struggling with the ever-increasing costs of living now have a new source of assistance.

With construction help from the Braybrook Men’s Shed, the Yarraville Community Centre’s [YCC] food pantry is now open for community members to access.

According to the 2015/2016 Australian Bureau of Statistics expenditure survey, the cost of food and non-alcoholic beverages was the second-largest household expense.

YCC chief executive Christine McCall said the centre is responding to growing requests for assistance within the community.

“We have identified a demand in our community for food relief since cost of living has surged,” she said.

“Yarraville Community Centre aims to foster community wellbeing with numerous free initiatives that our community can easily access.

“Our food pantry is one such initiative aiming to assist people in finding essential groceries during these uncertain times.”

The food pantry will stock non-perishable and perishable items such as cereals, tuna, pasta, rice, tinned vegetables and fresh fruit and vegetables.

Ms McCall said everyone is welcome to use the service.

“There is never any judgement or questioning, just friendly faces, you will feel welcome here,” she said.

The YCC is also seeking volunteers to assist with the program in restocking and maintaining the pantry.

Donations can be dropped off at the YCC at 59 Francis Street in Yarraville.
