Two women who started Australia’s first female-owned brewery at Spotswood are vying for the title of world’s best ale-makers at Wetherspoon’s international beer festival in the UK this month.

Yarraville’s Jayne Lewis and business partner Danielle Allen launched their Two Birds golden ale in 2011 and opened the Two Birds Brewing tasting room in 2014.

Earlier this year they went to Leicester in the UK to brew 50,000 litres of their award-winning Sunset Ale to be served for the festival.

Sunset Ale is a rich brew with toffee, citrus and tropical characters.

Ten beers from around the world will compete with 40 beers from the UK for Wetherspoon’s international beer title.

Two Birds are up against brewers from New Zealand, Japan, South Africa, Canada, Holland, Norway and the United States.

Ms Lewis described her brew as “very easy drinking”.

“The beers we make are really approachable … the kind that you sit and have a few of in a pub, and [they] go really well with food as well,” she said.

“To be recognised on an international stage, such as Wetherspoon’s international beer festival, demonstrates that females can do anything they want to, even in a male-dominated industry like beer brewing”.

Ms Lewis said the pair decided on Spotswood for a brewery and tasting room open to the public “because it is such an upcoming part of this part of the world”.
