Grants to energise local streets and spaces

Fifteen initiatives have shared in $115,000 in funding in the latest round of Maribyrnong council’s events and activation grants announced on Friday.

Each of the initiatives have received up to $10,000 to deliver activities between February and June.

“These grants enable our community’s creativity to shine, supporting projects that showcase the spirit, diversity and vibrancy of Maribyrnong,” mayor Mohamed Semra said in announcing the recipients on 12 December.

“We’re pleased to back initiatives that encourage people to gather, explore and enjoy our city in new ways.”

One of the funded projects is CineRedux: Footscray Reimagined, a film and media program centred around the historic Trocadero Arcade and Five Walls Gallery.

The program will feature immersive art, projections, and live performances, as well as guided walking tours exploring Footscray’s rich heritage.

Another recipient, Cypher Culture, a local street dance organisation, will present Double Trouble Vol. 3 – a free dance and hip-hop event celebrating women and west-based artists in the breaking community.

The event will take place in Maddern Square, Footscray.

The Yarraville Twilight Sessions has also received funding to stage six evenings of live, outdoor music in the Yarraville Village precinct.

Featuring a diverse mix of performers, the twilight sessions are aimed to transforming Yarraville’s public spaces and energising the area’s nighttime economy.

In addition, a River-Listening Symposium will take place along the Maribyrnong River at Pipemakers Park in early June, offering an immersive program exploring local ecology, cultural knowledge and shared listening practices.
