Grants to seal car parks, reduce pollution

Several Hobsons Bay reserves will receive upgrades as part of efforts to improve air quality.

HC Kim Reserve in Seaholme, Loft Reserve in Newport, and Langshaws Reserve in Altona North have been named successful applicants of the 2025 Air Quality Improvement Precincts Grants 2025 program.

A grant of $384,147 has been allocated to seal the rock car parks at the three local ovals, in order to reduce dust pollution.

The grans program provides state government funding for projects aimed at improving air quality in the inner west which is considered a high-pollution area.

The program supports initiatives that reduce PM2.5 and PM10 emissions.

PM2.5 is particulate matter of a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or smaller, and PM10 is particulate matter of a diameter of 10 micrometers (0.01 mm) or smaller.

Both are common in dust pollution.

Williamstown MP Melissa Horne welcomed the grant and said it would build on work that had already been done to combat dust pollution in the area.

“This grant follows the work the state government has done in sealing car parks at Paisley Park – home of Altona Magic and Altona Phoenix soccer clubs – as well as the sealing of Ross Road,” Ms Horne said.

“These works to reduce dust pollution in community areas have a massive effect on improving our overall air quality.”
