Organisers of a grape squashing competition at next month’s Yarraville festival are promising the event will be a barrel of fun.

St Nicholas Greek school will be hosting the event, inviting people to shed their shoes and make ‘mousto’ or grape juice the old-fashioned way – squashing grapes with their bare feet like their ancestors once did.

School principal Father Alexandros said the organisers are looking for participants who don’t mind getting a little bit sticky.

“Who will be crowned Yarraville’s best grape squasher? There are prizes to be won for the best grape squashing technique and the fastest grape squasher,” he said.

“Following the success of our recent zorbathon dance off in November last year, the school will again host the ever-popular zorbathon dance competition to find Melbourne’s best dancer.”

Yarraville Festival will be held Sunday, February 17.
