Guided walk through country

Dean Stewart, a Wemba Wemba Wergaia man will be conducting a guided nature walk, in partnership with Hobsons Bay council.

The walk will take place in the diverse habitat of the area around Laverton Creek.

For 20 years, Dean has been heavily involved in cultural and conservation, projects and education projects.

More recently he has worked with Hobsons Bay council delivering talks on conservation, as well as talks with schools and other community groups.

“For this bush walk I have basically tried to fit 60,000 years of history into 60 minutes,” he said.

“I will be giving the tour a little bit of an overview of connections to the place and connections to knowledge.

“I always say, every single one of us are the newest custodians of this ancient land that we now call home, as families and children are called exactly the same place home for 50,000 years, now it’s our turn and our time.”

Dean said he will be sharing a fraction of his knowledge, as well as how the local environment is particularly important.

“It’s really all about giving local people a connection with their local place, and their local history.

“As I always like to say, don’t be a tourist, in your own birthplace to know your own backyard.”

The walk will be taking place on Saturday, August 12.
