Heavily-armed police descend on car in Altona

A Laverton man was arrested after the Special Operations Group swooped on an allegedly stolen car in Altona on Wednesday night.

Shopkeepers reported police armed with assault rifles surrounded the car about 6.40pm in Civic Parade, near the corner of Millers Road.

Police smashed a driver’s side window of the Audi station wagon to arrest the driver.

Uniform officers and detectives searched the car, bagging evidence at the scene.

Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Colson said police arrested the 32-year-old driver before executing two search warrants in Woods and Wright streets, Laverton.

He said this resulted in the man being charged with 29 offences including ice trafficking, possessing ammunition, car theft and burglary.

The man was remanded to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.
