The state government will be working with local organisations to help give young people in Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay more opportunities to connect with their communities.
Lorrok Inc and Victoria Karen Communities Network Group will be working within the two municipalities as a part of the government’s new Youth Engagement Grants.
The Victoria Karen Communities Network Group’s project Victoria will aim to strengthen connections between Karen and other young people from Myanmar through sporting and cultural events.
Through this, they will also train them to become leaders within the community.
The project from Lorrok Inc will deliver education, training, recreational, and sporting activities to support young people leaving custodial settings.
The project is focused on supporting African Australians, particularly those of South Sudanese background.
Crime Prevention Minister Natalie Hutchins said that disconnection and social isolation can drive young people away from their communities and towards dangerous behaviour.
“But we also know that grassroots organisations have the skills, knowledge and expertise to address the root causes of crime, which is why we’re partnering with local groups to build a safer Victoria for all,” she said.
The grants are part of the Victorian Government’s Building Safer Communities Program, an initiative under the Crime Prevention Strategy, which aims to prevent crime in communities.
Funding of up to $50,000 per project over two years is available for small multicultural and Aboriginal organisations to help young people aged 8 – 24 make positive life choices.
