Westgate Highway Patrol is calling on drivers to take extra care on the roads this weekend.

Sergeant Marty Wallace said police would increase their presence on Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong roads during the long weekend for the statewide Operation Regal.

Police will focus on speeding, driver distraction, seatbelts, fatigue and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Sergeant Wallace said particular attention would be paid to the main arterial roads to deter speeding and distraction. Preliminary breath tests would be conducted across all three municipalities.

He called on drivers to be aware of other traffic around them.

“Queen’s Birthday is a time where the risk of collisions and injury is greatly increased,” he said.

“Police will be working on the roads …our aim is to reduce the trauma on our roads to see that all drivers get to and from their destinations safely.”

Last year, Wyndham drivers were charged with 152 offences over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend – the second highest-number of offences in Melbourne after Brimbank.
