Hobson Bay council will be holding an e-waste recycling day

Hobsons Bay council will again be running an e-waste recycling day for locals to repurpose household electronics and appliances.

Residents with mobile phones, televisions, appliances and cables to recycle will have the opportunity to get rid of their unused and unwanted items in an environmentally friendly way.

They can drop-off their electronic waste (e-waste) for free in Altona on Saturday March 5 at Council’s Operations Centre from 8am to 3pm.

Small to medium sized electronic appliances are accepted, which includes: Mobile phones and tablets, televisions, computers and computer accessories toasters and power boards.

Items that will not be accepted include batteries, light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, barbecues, televisions with broken glass and hazardous waste.

Any electronic items collected with data storage capacity will be securely erased.

Mayor of Hobsons Bay Peter Hemphill encouraged residents to take up the chance to get rid of their household items in a sustainable way.

“From July 1 2019, all e-waste was banned from Victorian landfills, which means that e-waste cannot go into any household bins,” he said.

“An event like the e-waste drop-off will ensure appliances that are collected can be sorted and dismantled for recycling – reducing the burden on landfill and giving many items an opportunity to be repurposed.”

The e-waste drop off event is drive-through and contactless, and proof of vaccination or eligible exemption is a condition of entry.
