Long-serving Hobsons Bay councillor Peter Hemphill has been elected to his third term as Hobsons Bay mayor.

The Strand Ward representative is Hobsons Bay’s longest-serving councillor, having spent 22 years in the role.

Cr Hemphill was elected to the mayoralty in a special council meeting on Friday night, with Wetlands ward councillor Diana Grima elected deputy mayor.

He paid tribute to outgoing mayor Jonathon Marsden and praised his strong leadership during a challenging year.

“I am honoured to hold the office of Mayor and will serve my community as I have for more than 20 years – with pride and a willingness to make Hobsons Bay the best it can be,” he said.

“The year ahead presents many great opportunities. As a city we are beginning to emerge and rebuild from COVID and I want to ensure Council does all it can to boost business and community spirit in the COVID recovery.”

Cr Grima, who was commended by her council colleagues for her integrity and dedication to social justice issues, said she was honoured to be named deputy mayor.

“I watched my father serve the community when I was a little girl and I am honoured to hold the office of deputy mayor as he did back in 2012,” she said.

“I will continue to serve Hobsons Bay with passion, authenticity and dedication and am privileged to represent the people of the Wetlands Ward as Councillor and the broader municipality as now deputy mayor – I look forward to the year ahead.”
