Williamstown Community and Education Centre is among one of many community organisations who will receive a grant from the West Gate Neighbourhood Fund.
A total of 28 grants were announced ranging from $10,000 to $100,000 as part of a $10 million government fund established to support communities in Melbourne’s inner west during the construction of the West Gate Tunnel Project.
Williamstown Community and Education Centre have been granted $10,000 for a one-off community project.
Established in 1974, the centre aims to deliver quality adult education programs by offering support, skill development and social activities.
Community Development Coordinator Renee Daniele said the centre will use the money to develop and deliver 38 facilitated community workshops over a 12 month period.
These workshops will range from cooking and gardening to recycling and social media.
“[The funding is] important especially after COVID, there’s been a lot of things we haven’t been able to run,” Ms. Daniele said.
“There’s students that are here daily, some here for quite a lot of hours over the weekend, the year, and most [of the] majority, [are] from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.”
“The grant is great because then we can do lots of a variety of different activities for them, and hopefully build their skills and build participation and inclusion.”
