New data from Local Government Victoria has provided insight into how well local councils have been performing throughout 2020 and 2021.

The data gives councils a score out of 100 in each category.

In regards to community satisfaction on council’s making decisions in the best interest of the community, Maribyrnong City was towards the top of the list with a score of 69, only just beaten by Monash City with a score of 71.

Hepburn Shire was at the bottom of the list, scoring only 44 points, followed by South Gippsland Shire (46) and Macedon Ranges Shire (47).

The data also revealed that Hobsons Bay had the highest rate of bins missed on bin collection day, missing 22.04 bins per 10,000 scheduled kerbside collections.

The data set suggests this is due to the council’s implementation of a food and green waste service, the collection schedule of which has been changed multiple times over the past year.

The food and green waste bin was initially scheduled to be collected weekly, forcing the regular garbage to be collected fortnightly.

After some complaints from residents however, garbage collection went back to weekly and the green waste bin was pushed back to fortnightly.

Hindmarsh Shire was the top performer in this category, only missing two bins in 2020 and 2021, compared to the 14 in the previous year.

In regards to community satisfaction on public consultation and engagement efforts from the council, Maribyrnong again fared well, receiving a score of 70.

Monash City also received a score of 70, followed closely by Wyndham City, with a score of 69.2.

Councils were also rated out of ten on the socio-economic disadvantage of the municipality, with Brimbank receiving a score of one, making it the third most disadvantaged municipality one in Victoria.
