Thousands of people gathered surrounding Williamstown’s Cenotaph on Tuesday April

25, to pay their respects for Anzac Day, organised by the Newport RSL Sub-Branch.

Over 2000 people gathered for the touching dawn service, those in attendance included notable members of the local community, past and current serving members and cadets of the Australian armed forces.

Major Mark Bainbridge gave the official introduction and welcome to the service, followed by a dedication by Fr Greg Trythall, a gathering prayer from Reverend Elizabeth Murray (Holy Trinity Church) and the Lord’s prayer by Father Greg Trythal (St Mary’s Church).

Councillor Jonathon Marsden delivered The Anzac Day address, who later said it was a privilege.

“I feel honoured to stand with my friends and neighbours here today, with my friends

and fellow veterans and their families to remember the sacrifice and suffering of those who have fought in Australia’s wars,” he said.

Several community organisations had the opportunity to show their support by laying wreaths at the Cenotaph, including members from Hobsons Bay Yacht Club and students from local schools.

The general public then had the opportunity to pay their respects by laying poppies among the other flowers.

Following the conclusion of the service, those in attendance were invited for nibbles and coffee at the Hobsons Bay Yacht Club for a gunfire breakfast where the commemoration continued.
