Hobsons Bay council hosted representatives from its sister council in Queensland as part of a National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee [NAIDOC] Week flag raising ceremony on Thursday, July 7.

Through the sharing of information, culture and art, the relationship between Hobson Bay council and Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council has existed since 2003.

Yarrabah is the traditional country of the Gunggangi and Yidinji people and is located in far north Queensland and is an independent Aboriginal community with a population of about 4000 people.

The Yarrabah Cultural Dancers performed for attendees of the flag raising ceremony.

This year’s NAIDOC Week theme is ‘Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!’ and calls for systemic change, Constitutional change, heritage and cultural protection and a comprehensive process of truth-telling, as well as working towards treaties and calling out racism.
