Hobsons Bay council has welcomed recent commitments from independent candidate for Point Cook Shwetali Sawant to secure funding towards a new pool centre and a sport pavilion upgrade in Altona Meadows.
She has committed to secure $40 million towards the proposed Western Aquatic and Early Years Centre project and $3 million towards the redevelopment of the sports pavilion at Bruce Comben Reserve in Altona Meadows.
The Bruce Comben Reserve pavilion is home to the Altona Roosters Rugby League Club, Seabrook Cricket Club and Westside Touch Association.
The redevelopment would include additional changerooms, a public toilet, improved storage and a covered viewing area.
Listed as one of the key advocacy priorities identified through Hobsons Bay council’s advocacy strategy for 2021-25, the $60 million Western Aquatic and Early Years Centre would include an eight-lane 25 metre pool, a learn to swim pool, an aqua play splash pad, a toddler pool, a wellness centre with a warm water pool, a spa, a sauna, a gymnasium, an early years’ service and a cafe.
The centre would also focus on providing services for people with a disability, particularly catering for people on the autism spectrum.
Hobsons Bay mayor Peter Hemphill said Ms Sawant’s commitment to the pool was welcome news.
“Ms Sawant has made a substantial pledge, which would go a long way towards bringing the Western Aquatic and Early Years Centre to fruition,” he said.
Cr Hemphills said the Altona Roosters Rugby League Club was the largest rugby league club in Victoria, with about a quarter of its teams made up of female players.
“Improved facilities are required to keep pace with the rapid growth of the tenant clubs,” he said.
“Council recognises the importance of the Altona Roosters Rugby League Club in the state’s rugby competition.
“They need dedicated changerooms and larger social facilities, which will also be welcomed by the Seabrook Cricket Club and Westside Touch Association.”
